Life Insurance Plans

Basic Life Insurance        

Tufts University provides Basic Life Insurance for all benefit eligible employees through MetLife. This benefit is paid for by the University.

The amount of coverage is equal to one times your annual base salary, rounded to the next higher $1,000, with a maximum of $1,500,000.  Amounts in excess of $750,000 require a Statement of Health.

Supplemental (Optional) Life Insurance

The Supplemental Life Insurance program through MetLife offers you the opportunity to purchase additional life insurance up to four times your annual base salary or a $1,500,000 maximum (this maximum is for both Basic and Supplemental Life combined). Amounts in excess of $750,000 require a Statement of Health.   

If you are not currently enrolled in the plan, or you are requesting an increase in your coverage during Open Enrollment, you are required to complete and mail a Statement of Health directly to MetLife. A Statement of Health form can be found on the Tufts University Human Resources Forms webpage.

Dependent Life Insurance

The Dependent Life Insurance program through MetLife offers you the opportunity to purchase life insurance coverage for your eligible family members.

Eligible family members include:

  • Your legal spouse
  • Qualified same sex domestic partner
  • Your unmarried dependent child(ren) at least 15 days old, under age 19 or until age 25 if a full-time student in an accredited school who is dependent on you for main support and care
  • Your unmarried dependent child(ren) who is mentally or physically disabled, who cannot hold a self-supporting job due to a handicap

If your spouse is not currently enrolled in the plan, you are required to complete and mail a Statement of Health directly to MetLife. A Statement of Health form can be found on the Tufts University Human Resources, Forms webpage.

Please note, MetLife decides whether or not to approve coverage. Once the Benefits Office has received approval from MetLife, payroll deductions will begin retroactive to the date of the requested change.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

The AD&D program offered through MetLife offers you the opportunity to elect coverage levels from one (1) to five (5) times your annual basic earnings (rounded to the next multiple of $1,000), in the event of accidental loss of sight, life, speech, limb, hearing, etc. The maximum allowed benefit is $1,000,000.
