Professional Development Programs for Managers

Performance Development Program Lunch & Learns
A series of two hour programs based on the Performance Development Program (PDP).  These programs provide an overview of the PDP, tools and resources available to help managers effectively collaborate with employees to implement the performance development program.  Participation in these programs will help managers to:

  • Develop annual department goals which support division/school objectives and which serve as a foundation for writing individual employee goals
  • Identify, for all employees, development needs using the Tufts Organizational Competencies
  • Identify, for managers they supervise, development needs using the Tufts Leadership Competencies
  • Provide realistic feedback and coaching for employees to achieve and exceed performance expectations
  • Prepare Performance Review documents and conduct Performance Review meetings

Foundations of Leadership
Foundations of Leadership (FOL) provides a confidential learning environment, where managers practice leadership skills and gain insights from their colleagues through participation in small group discussions and activities.  Tufts Leadership Competencies, Leader Behavior Analysis II and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument are among the learning resources utilized.

Lessons in Leadership
Lessons in Leadership (LIL) is a new development initiative sponsored by Human Resources/Organizational Development and Training (ODT), which was first introduced in October 2006.  The art and science of management, organizational effectiveness and leadership is an evolving field of study and the LIL series reflects Tufts commitment to continuous learning.  LIL, which is offered twice each year, provides an opportunity for Tufts managers to learn about best practices and new developments.  Each half-day Lesson may include theory and examples of practical application and/or insightful remarks from accomplished leaders.

Manager Orientation
Manager Orientation is offered on all campuses periodically. It is a
half day program, which provides an overview of Human Resources and the Office of Institutional Diversity.  The program highlights the key services offered by HR and who to contact.  This program is beneficial because it answers basic questions and illustrates the support available for managers with regards to employee relations, HR polices, recruitment, development, compensation, etc.
